Highlights of the Week
- Marijuana trade, possession, distribution and selling, now becomes legal in more than half the United States. A legal, well-regulated pot industry would be a safer, less crime-infested one, but it would not necessarily be a bigger one: tobacco use has plunged as regulation has been tightened and public education about its health risks has improved.
- The Fall of Berlin Wall will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on Sunday, 9th. The good health of West Germany saw heavy population shift from the East side. The divide in growth between two erstwhile segments is still a big worry.
- Goa gets a new Chief Minister. Manohar Parrikar moves into the Central cabinet as Defence Minister and Laxmikant Parsekar fills his shoes in Panaji. Let us hope the good, intelligent, hard-working person in the new Defence Minister really solves some of the biggest problems plaguing our Defence system.
- The jury is still out on the amount of usage of Facebook is on the rise in India and China. One survey puts them as the No. 1 and 2 users and another does not list them in top 10.
- Good scores in UGC NET will now not only lead candidates to a valuable PhD but also make them available for immediate recruitment by PSUs. Indian Oil Corporation has already issued an advertisement asking qualified students to send in job application. So, please cash on if you can.
